Professor James Cantley

Chair of Diabetes and Metabolism, University of Dundee

James Cantley is Professor of Diabetes and Metabolism and T1D Grand Challenge Senior Research Fellow at the University of Dundee, School of Medicine. His current T1D Grand Challenge project is focussed on pre-clinical development of therapeutic strategies to drive beta cell regeneration during diabetes. James has maintained a career-long research focus investigating pancreatic islet function and insulin secretion in the context of both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. He trained at Imperial College and University College London, undertook postdoctoral studies at the Garvan Institute, Sydney, and established his independent research group at the University of Oxford in 2013, supported by a DiabetesUK RD Lawrence Fellowship. He moved to the University of Dundee in 2019 where he leads the islet biology research group, working at the interface of cell biology, biochemistry and whole-body metabolic physiology. Alongside research, James is an enthusiastic advocate for the role of innovation and enterprise in making a real-world impact from academic research.
