Dr Srikanth Bellary

Dr Srikant Bellary is a Reader in Metabolic Medicine at Aston University, Birmingham and an Honorary Consultant Physician in Diabetes and Endocrinology at the University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Birmingham, UK. 


He has extensive experience in undertaking clinical research and his research interests includes metabolic ageing, diabetes and ethnicity, new treatments for type 2 diabetes and diabetic kidney disease. Dr Bellary’s research has provided important insights into health inequalities driven by ethnicity, ageing and deprivation. His work on diabetes (The UK Asian Diabetes Study) in south Asians has led to impactful changes to clinical pathways and greater awareness of health risks in minority ethnic groups. He has also been the Chief and Principal investigator for many clinical trials that include, new therapies, industry led multi-national studies, studies on frailty and was UK Chief investigator for the recently concluded Semaglutide and Renal outcomes (FLOW) study. He has a proven track record of securing research funding from major funders such as NIHR, European union as well as from charities and pharmaceutical industry. He has over 100 peer reviewed publications in highly reputed international journals is the Deputy Editor-in-Chief for Therapeutic Advances in Endocrinology and Metabolism and serves on the senior editorial board for BMC Endocrine Disorders and British Journal of Diabetes. 


Dr Bellary holds several senior leadership roles in the NHS. He is the Diabetes lead for the Birmingham and Solihull ICB, Chair of the Diabetes Clinical Network at University Hospitals Birmingham and the Regional Diabetes lead for West Midlands Research Delivery Network. He has been instrumental in developing new clinical services for patients with diabetes including the award-winning Solihull Integrated Diabetes model (SOLID). He was appointed as 1 of 12 National Diabetes Champions by Diabetes UK in 2014 and works closely with charities such as Diabetes UK and South Asian Health Foundation.
