Jane Blazeby FMedSci is Professor of Surgery at the University of Bristol. After studying Medicine and completing surgical training in the South West, she gained an MRC Clinician Scientist award in 2000 while starting as an upper GI cancer surgeon. Her MD (1993–1995) developed and validated a portfolio of outcome measures to use in surgical oncology, sparking her interest in patient-centred surgical care. She directed the MRC Hub for Trials Methodology Research (2009–2019), pioneering methods for surgical trials. Jane founded and leads the Royal College of Surgeons Surgical Trials Centre in Bristol. She is chief investigator of the NIHR By-Band-Sleeve trial comparing the effectiveness of different surgical procedures for severe obesity. She supports new chief investigators and academic trainees to design and deliver major trials, transforming UK surgical research. Recently, she co-leads the Surgical Innovation theme at the Bristol BRC and the NIHR Surgery and Peri- Operative Care TRC, advancing early-phase studies and governance of surgical innovation.
