Sarah Alicea is a leading diabetes dietitian and PhD researcher at the University of Warwick, specialising in disordered eating in Type 1 diabetes (T1DE). She is the Clinical Lead for T1DE at Barts Health NHS Trust, where she runs a joint diabetes and eating disorder service and has supported the development of T1DE pathways across multiple NHS services nationally.
Sarah is a co-organiser of the Diabetes UK conference, a Diabetes UK Clinical Champion, and former Chair (now Research Lead) of the British Dietetic Association Diabetes Specialist Group. She has written national guidance with NICE, NHS England and the Royal College of Psychiatrists.
Her PhD centres on the development and validation of a novel screening tool to improve identification of T1DE in clinical practice. Alongside her research, Sarah has led national education initiatives, including a T1DE-focused e-learning platform, a UK-wide professional supervision group, and the UK professional conference for eating disorders and diabetes (UKPCEDD), delivered in collaboration with the CYP Diabetes Network.
She is passionate about improving recognition and treatment for people with diabetes and eating disorders, and supporting clinicians through training and supervision to navigate this area of care with greater confidence and understanding.
