Professor Francis Stephens

Professor of Exercise Physiology, University of Exeter

Professor Francis Stephens is a Professor of Exercise Physiology and Metabolism, and director of the Nutritional Physiology Research Unit, at the University of Exeter. His research interests are centred on the influence of nutrition and physical (in)activity on the metabolic and molecular regulation of the integration of fat, carbohydrate, and amino acid metabolism in human skeletal muscle in health, ageing, and type 2 diabetes. He has expertise in utilizing in vivo stable isotopic tracer techniques combined with ex vivo muscle biopsy analyses to investigate the effect of nutritionally manipulating skeletal muscle metabolism on the regulation of muscle mass and insulin sensitivity. His presentation will focus on whether insulin resistance affects the regulation of muscle mass in type 2 diabetes, and the role of nutrition and exercise in preventing muscle loss.
