Helen Day is a Paediatric Diabetes Specialist Nurse at Ormskirk Hospital, Mersey West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS. She has worked as a children’s nurse since 2004, gaining extensive experience across both ward-based and community settings. Since 2018, she has specialised in paediatric diabetes, developing a strong passion for creating supportive environments that empower children and young people to live well with diabetes. In 2023, Helen was awarded a full scholarship to attend the ISPAD Science School for Healthcare Professionals, where she further developed her research skills and contributed to the early development of the STEPPS project. In recognition of her dedication and impact, she was awarded National Paediatric Diabetes Nurse of the Year in 2024. Helen is a key contributor to the STEPPS (Structured Education Through Peer and Psychological Support) project, which was created to deliver diabetes education in a fun, engaging, and interactive way. By integrating psychological principles and peer support, STEPPS enables children and young people to build confidence in their self-management skills while benefiting from a safe and supportive peer environment.
