Dr Hellena Habte-Asres

Lead Clinical Research Nurse in Diabetes & Chronic Kidney Disease, Royal Free Hospital

Dr Hellena Habte-Asres is a clinical academic nurse and postdoctoral researcher specialising in diabetes and chronic kidney disease. She is Lead Clinical Academic Nurse at the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust and a Visiting Research Fellow at King’s College London. Her work focuses on improving outcomes for people with advanced microvascular complications of diabetes.

Dr Habte-Asres completed her PhD in Epidemiology in 2023, where she investigated the risk contribution of glycaemic variability to the development of end stage kidney disease. She currently leads a programme of research in integrated diabetes and advanced chronic kidney disease, alongside research and service improvement initiatives that integrate diabetes care into renal services, with a strong emphasis on equity and access for underserved populations.

She is widely published, and her work has received multiple national and international awards, with presentations on innovative models of care at conferences worldwide. She is committed to advancing clinical academic nursing and improving care for people with complex, multimorbid conditions.
