Claire Culshaw

Claire Culshaw is Wirral’s only PCN Diabetes Nurse Consultant, recognised for her innovative approach to transforming diabetes care through clinical leadership, workforce development and service integration. With a background spanning acute medicine, inpatient specialist diabetes nursing and primary care, she brings a breadth of experience to improving diabetes services across organisational boundaries.

Since 2023, Claire has pioneered Wirral’s PCN DSN role, developing a bespoke Diabetes Integrated Advanced Specialist Team (DIAST) model. Her whole-workforce approach embeds specialist expertise, education and clinical support within general practice, strengthening clinical knowledge and competence to enable more people to access specialist diabetes care closer to home.

Holding an MSc in Advanced Clinical Practice with distinction, Claire is passionate about empowering healthcare professionals to deliver high-quality, evidence-based diabetes care. In 2026, she was named Community Diabetes Specialist Nurse of the Year at the National Diabetes Nursing Awards and received high commendation for her DIAST work. She is also shortlisted for three 2026 Nursing Times Awards categories, recognising her leadership, primary care innovation and contribution to integrated care.
