Aileen King is Professor of Integrative Diabetes Research at King’s College London. Her interest in diabetes research began in 1993 during a placement year at Uppsala University, undertaken as part of her undergraduate studies at the University of Ulster. She subsequently completed her PhD at Uppsala University, followed by postdoctoral training at the Joslin Diabetes Center, Harvard University. She has worked in the field of islet biology since her doctoral training, focusing on factors that influence islet function and survival, particularly in the context of transplantation outcomes. More recently, her research has expanded to improving outcomes in stem cell–derived islet transplantation. She also has a strong interest in preclinical models of diabetes and in understanding sex differences in islet biology.
